More than 40 states are opening many businesses and malls today in an attempt to restart their economies. The pandemic has killed nearly 76,000 people and infected over 1.2 million Americans as the U.S. enters an experimental phase of Trial & Error.

The Center for Disease Control has outlined BENCHMARKS for reopening including aggressive testing, tracing, and a downward trajectory of documented cases in a 14-day period. The United States has been the world’s epicenter of COVID-19 for 8 weeks concurrently.

  • U.S. COVID-19 deaths reported yesterday: 1,949 (falling)
  • U.S. COVID-19 new cases reported yesterday: 22,166 (rising)
  • Daily tests reported, U.S.: 215,443 (falling)
  • States receiving most new jobless claims: California (318,000), Texas (247,000), Georgia (226,000)
  • Total initial jobless claims, 33.8 million

While travel, hospitality and real estate are down, Instagram and Doordash are experiencing growth, and Netflix, My Chart, Instacart and Houseparty are exploding.

Prosecutors in Georgia late yesterday charged a white father and son with murder in the February shooting death of Ahmaud Arbery, an unarmed black man who was jogging. The case became a source of national outrage — from Joe Biden, LeBron James and others — after a video of the shooting emerged this week.

Finally, Michael Flynn, President Trump’s first National Security Adviser, pled guilty to lying to the F.B.I. about his contacts with a Russian diplomat. The Justice Department said yesterday that it dropped the matter because those lies were not “materially” relevant to the Russia investigation. Attorney General William Barr defended the action saying, “history is written by the winners.”
