Privacy Policy

What we collect, why we collect it, and what you can do about it.

Last updated 19 October 2026

01Who we are

Charlatan publishes charlatanmagazine.com and the weekly newsletter All the World’s a Stage. This policy covers our website, newsletters, emails, sign-up forms, and any related features we offer now or in the future (the “Services”). By using the Services, you agree to this policy.

02Information we collect

Information you give us. Your email address, your name, and anything else you enter in a form, plus messages you send us and replies to surveys or other requests.

Information collected automatically. When you use the Services, we and our service providers may collect:

  • your device, browser, operating system, and IP address, and an approximate location based on it
  • the pages and articles you view, when and how often, how you arrived, and what you click
  • whether you open our emails, which links in them you click, and when
  • identifiers stored in cookies, local storage, or similar technologies

Information linked to you. If you subscribe, sign in, or arrive from one of our emails, we may link your activity on the Services to your email address or subscriber record.

Information from others. We may receive information about you from service providers, such as email delivery and bounce reports, and from public sources.

03How we use it

We use the information we collect to:

  • send newsletters, updates, and other messages you signed up for
  • run features of the Services, such as free-article limits, subscriber checks, and sign-in
  • understand who reads what, measure how the Services and emails perform, and improve them
  • tailor content, recommendations, and messages to your interests
  • keep the Services secure, deliver email reliably, and prevent abuse or fraud
  • comply with the law and enforce our terms
  • do anything else we tell you about when we collect the information, or with your consent

04Cookies and email tracking

We and our service providers use cookies, browser local storage, and similar technologies. We use them to remember your choices, recognise you as a subscriber, count the free articles you’ve read, measure traffic, and keep the Services secure.

Our emails contain small images and tracked links. These tell us whether an email was opened and which links were clicked. Links in our emails may also include an identifier, so we can recognise you when you visit the website.

You can clear or block cookies and local storage in your browser settings, and turn off images in your email app. Some features, such as reading limits or staying signed in, may then not work as intended.

05How we share it

We do not sell your personal information. We share it only:

  • with service providers who help us run the Services, such as hosting, content delivery and security, email sending, email and office tools, and newsletter software. They may use it only to provide services to us.
  • for legal reasons, when we believe the law, a court, or a government request requires it, or to protect our rights, our readers, or the public
  • in a business change, such as a merger, sale, or transfer of assets
  • with your consent, or at your direction

We may share information that is combined or does not identify you, such as total readership figures.

06Retention and security

Retention. We keep information as long as you’re subscribed or using the Services, as long as we need it for the purposes above, or as the law requires. After you unsubscribe, we may keep your email address so we don’t email you again.

Security. We take reasonable steps to protect your information. No system is completely secure, though, and we can’t guarantee it.

Where it’s kept. We’re based in the United States, and our providers may store or process data in the US and other countries, where privacy laws may differ.

07Your choices and rights

  • Unsubscribe at any time with the link at the bottom of every newsletter, or email [email protected].
  • Access, correct, or delete your information by emailing us. We may need to confirm your identity first.
  • Extra rights where you live. In the UK, the EU, California, and some other places, you may have further rights, such as learning what we hold, getting a copy, objecting to or limiting some uses, and withdrawing consent. You can also complain to your local data protection authority. We will not treat you differently for using these rights.

Where a law asks for a legal basis, we rely on your consent, on providing the Services you asked for, on our legitimate interest in running and improving them, or on a legal duty.

08Children and changes

The Services are not meant for children under 16, and we do not knowingly collect their information. If you think a child has given us information, contact us and we’ll delete it.

We may update this policy from time to time. We’ll post the new version here and change the date at the top, and for significant changes we may also tell you by email. Continuing to use the Services after a change means you accept it.
