U.S. Deaths Hit Horrifying One-Day Record — 4,591

The number of reported deaths in the U.S. hit a grim new high on Thursday, spiking to nearly double the previous record during the COVID-19 pandemic. In the last 24 hours, 4,591 people were reported to have died from coronavirus. The prior daily record was 2,569. In total, there have been more than 33,000 deaths in the U.S., according to Johns Hopkins University. Over 2 Million are now infected throughout the world.

Hopes for a Coronavirus Cure — Gilead's Remdesivir

A Chicago hospital treating severe COVID-19 patients with the antiviral medicine — Remdesivir — in a clinical trial reported seeing rapid recoveries from fever and respiratory symptoms, with nearly all patients discharged in less than a week. Remdesivir, manufactured by Gilead Sciences, was tested on 125 people with COVID-19, of whom 113 had severe cases of the disease. The patients were given daily infusions of Remdesivir. In a leaked video discussion about the trial results with University of Chicago faculty members, Kathleen Mullane, the university’s infectious disease specialist overseeing the remdesivir studies for the hospital, said: “The best news is that most of our patients have already been discharged — which is great! We’ve only had two patients perish.” The same trials are being run concurrently at other institutions, though no official clinical data has been published. The Remdesivir news helped push financial markets higher, with the Dow Industrials expected to open around 3 percent higher.

Reopening the United States

President Trump assertion that he has "total authority to unilaterally reopen states economies" on Monday, was unilaterally rejected by congress, experts, and scholars of the US Constitution.

After receiving bipartisan blowback from his remarks, Trump on Tuesday attempted to backpedal his stance, saying "I will be coordinating with state governors to restart their respective states' economies."

By Thursday, President Trump told the governors “You’re going to be calling the shots,” in what appears to be his first, practical encounter with Federalism.
